The grand relaunch of a famous Hong Kong nightclub on Saturday night was marred by a police raid that resulted in at least one person arrested on suspicion of money laundering.
Police and Food and Environmental Hygiene Department officers raided Big Boss Generation (BBG) in Tsim Sha Tsui at around 10pm that night, just hours after the club opened.
Photos from the scene showed dozens of uniformed officers entering the club and inspecting customers and staff.
The force also arrested a man on suspicion of money laundering.
Police said the operation was part of a broader effort by the force’s organised crime and triad bureau, in cooperation with the department, to patrol entertainment venues in the area.
BBG, described as a multiple entertainment venue, opened on the same 56,000 sq ft site at the New Mandarin Plaza in Tsim Sha Tsui East as the once-glamorous Club Bboss, which closed more than a decade ago.
The new club uses the former occupant’s old Chinese name, which translates to “Big Boss Club”.
Saturday’s grand opening was attended by Japanese actress Sola Aoi, who hosted a fan event at the premises for hundreds of admirers.
BBG, which raised more than HK$100 million (US$12.7 million) from mainland Chinese and Hong Kong investors, planned to revive some well-known features of the old club, including a signature golden Rolls-Royce-themed vintage car used to transport customers to their private booth.
BBG was also expected to collaborate with cruise line operators to entice visitors with a chance to experience a bygone era of the city.
The return of the nightlife spot in eastern Tsim Sha Tsui also signalled hopes of a robust recovery for the tourism sector, on the back of recent growth in mainland and international visitor arrivals in the past five months.
Nightclubs thrived amid an economic boom in the 1980s and 1990s as bankers, brokers, business leaders and factory owners frequented such venues to discuss deals over drinks.
Among those establishments, Bboss was legendary for its hostesses. During its peak years, more than 1,000 local employees fluent in English, Japanese and Cantonese were on hand to offer an “hourly conversation service”.
