Petite police officer descends into 40-metre deep well, suffers from severe oxygen deprivation to pull toddler to safety
The heroic actions of a woman auxiliary police officer in Xinjiang who climbed into a 40 metre-deep, 40cm-wide well to rescue a two-year-old girl have moved countless people online.
The toddler later visited the officer in hospital to express her gratitude.
The incident took place on April 16 in Luopu county, Xinjiang, in China’s northwestern Uygur autonomous region, when a little girl fell into an abandoned well while playing.
The 40-metre-deep well had a narrow 40-centimetre opening, which meant that conventional rescue equipment was too large. Faint cries of fear were heard from the toddler.
Bupatim Abudukadir, a petite auxiliary police officer, volunteered for the rescue mission.
She secured herself with a safety rope, carefully descended into the narrow well, and upon reaching the bottom, found the child submerged in mud up to her chest.
